American born woman visiting Russia sentenced to 7 1/2 years in prison on cannabis charge
Naama Issachar, a 26-year-old woman who has dual American and Israeli citizenship, has been charged with smuggling drugs into Russia after authorities at a Moscow airport found nine grams of cannabis in her luggage as she was leaving for Tel Aviv.
Issachar has been jailed in Russia since April. In May, Russian prosecutors decided to charge her with smuggling drugs into Russia instead of her original cannabis possession charge, and on Friday she was sentenced to 7½ years in prison.
Her family reached out to the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, who in turn promised to do everything in how power to get Issachar released as soon as possible.
