Cannabis Legalization May Be Coming to Mexico Quickly

A senator in Mexico proposed a bill to legalize cannabis on September 3rd, 2019 before the Supreme court deadline.

The senator responsible for the progressive move towards legalization is Sen. Julio Menchaca Salazar of the government’s ruling party, the National Regeneration Movement, also known as the MORENA party.

If the bill is passed, it would allow consumption, possession, and cultivation of cannabis for adults. The proposed bill also includes portions related to the use of medical cannabis and hemp-based textiles.

In a speech on Mexico’s senate floor, Salazar used state-level legalization in the United States as an example of the positives of legalizing marijuana. Some of his speaking points addressed the fact that prohibition has benefited criminal networks in Mexico.

Mexico’s President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and his administration support the legalization of cannabis. With states up North as an example of the benefits of legalization, and wide support for ending prohibition across the country, Mexico may soon be one of the next nations to legalize cannabis.
